Dear Friends:
A small group of students of the Wisdom, who, for some time, had had the feeling that they were disciples of the Inner Teachers of the Wisdom, were discussing the difficulties of following the principles and rules of the Spiritual Path while, at the same time, having to experience a regular human life with all the elements that enter into it: family life, social relations, career, work, citizen responsibilities, culture, recreation, etc.
In their analyses they were attempting to see how one could have a regular human life and, at the same time, be able to practice one of the various known approaches to the Path. Thus, they spent some time considering each approach known to them: the way of the mystic, the way of the thinker, the way of the heart, the way of the occultist, the way of service, the way of illumination, the way of introspection, the way of the Presence, the way of meditation, the way of discipleship, and other less known ways such as the way of ritual and discipline, the way of the Spirit of the Earth and the way of the City of Peace.
Every time in the various analyses, they arrived to the same conclusion: Living the daily life as a regular human being and living the Path are, definitely, incompatible things! They had been in this debate for some time when one of them, expressing frustration with the whole situation, came with the idea of asking one of the Inner Masters of the Wisdom for some light on the matter. He was going to propose to the others to have a group meditation and see if the Masters could illuminate them on the matter that was troubling their minds, but he did not have the time to voice this proposal.
These students of the Wisdom had been unaware that their debate had been observed by one of the Great Ones, and as soon as He noticed their frustration, He stepped into their midst making Himself visible to them. It was the Master Jesus!
The students were so impressed by the suddenness of the Master’s appearance and by His radiance that they could not voice their request. The Master Jesus then told them that everything was well, that for some time He had been listening to their analyses. Smiling, He explained that the Masters do not spy on their students. Simply, from time to time They approach groups of students to assess how the human element in each one is either helping the progress on the Path or hindering it. Based on these assessments, the Inner Teachers proceed to modify Their approaches to the students to help them more efficiently.
After this preamble, the Great Master proceeded to answer their unvoiced request in the following way:
“The Light can never be imprisoned in a way of living.”
“It cannot be imprisoned in a set of teachings, or in a discipline, or in a philosophy or in a religious doctrine.”
“It cannot be seated either in an institution or in a set of rules and laws. In other words, the Light cannot be taken and made to fit one’s expectations and projections; it does not matter how lofty they may be.”
“The Light is the Breath of Life Itself that flows on and on and is endlessly renewed by this flow. The Light is the Path Itself. Therefore, every time that we attempt to make the Path fit one’s personal ways, that is, the human ways, we step out of the Path.”
“Look within yourselves. In Its perfection, the Source of All never makes mistakes. The Source of All is always seeking to point out the Path that your illusory personalities try to hide. Be no longer who you think you are; for however sweet your dream may be, it is bound to fall short of truth. Become your Essence, and then both the Knowledge and the Force of the Cosmos will radiate in your mind and in your hands.”
“All the Force of the worlds is at your fingertips. You may some times see it sparkling within your hearts when you meditate, or when you pray. Give your will power, your mind and your hands to your heart, and you will direct this Force as and whenever it is needed. You will never be able to command this Force with your minds because it rebels against any order or command. I tell you truly, there is only one Way: In order to control the Force of Life you must be its eternal lover! Without glancing around you, or behind, you must become the Wave of Life Itself, and this is only possible by the Way of Love.”
“Use the Force of Life, my Brothers. It has been placed in the great surrounding cosmic reservoir by the Source of All to suit your purposes. This is what the everyday life of each human being is about — to become One with the Force of Life by the Way of Love. Only by using the Force of Life will you be sure that you are within the Force Itself; that is, within the Light Itself.”
“It is your consciousness of being yourself, one little being isolated from all the others, and your far too analytical thinking that prevent you from taking hold of the Force of Life in one flash, and from breathing it into Matter that calls out for it.”
“Do not forget my words, you seekers! Techniques and ways are the disciplines of the mind and the body, and they still may change the course of things, and of beings — but how long will they take? So practice them up to a point — in the hope of awakening the Way of the Love through the heart. The heart is simply all-powerful, and forever so. We may stifle it or we may listen to it. Often we think that we are listening to it, though we are hardly letting it breathe beneath the weight of reason and the excuses of the mind. You are aware that I am not speaking of the heart that beats inside us, in time with the seasons. I am speaking of the inner sun which links us to the chain of transcendental worlds. Abolish all barriers and ways, for they subject you for a while to techniques and to time itself. Learn simple to ask, without worrying about the answer, for the answer is always the same: Yes! The Force of the Source of All is unconditionally yours, as it is anyone’s. Do you not hear within yourselves even the echo of Its Eternal Will, of Its Loving Presence?”
“Sages, prophets and teachers have thought it necessary to create methods, ways and techniques in order to achieve the supreme Union. These you may regard as the rungs of a ladder but not as the ladder itself. More than anything, seek to awaken the Way of Love through the heart! Above all, you must take care not to let yourselves be caught in the web of illusions woven by the machinations and satisfactions of your own minds. This is to be dreaded even more than lack of love.”
“I tell you my Brothers, be of those who may be recognized by the light flowing from their hearts. The little sun of the mind, only able to speak to its kind, has not any positive energy to offer. It destroys itself.”
“Let it be understood that your daily life should be the life of those who go without masks for hiding their true being, the life of those who have no need for the tricks and the ingenuity of the mind and of the social conditioning. Your life should be the life of those who have rediscovered their Eternal Roots.”
“Do not expect from Me a liberating formula, some technique for solving your present situation and that will help you to flee what you see as the evils of this world!”
“You are not asked to accept, you are not asked to run away, but to go beyond. Right now stop turning in circles like a wheel around its own axis!”
With these words, the Master blessed the students and then vanished in a flash of light. Thus ended the debate about living a regular human life and, at the same time, living the Path.
